Sixteen Year Old Loses Life in Single Car Crash

On 07-12-06 at shortly after midnight, the Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call regarding a crash that was in the area of Duncan and Howell Roads. The location, in unincorporated Jackson County, is northeast of Grain Valley, Missouri. Upon the Deputy's arrival, the calling party stated that she was on her way home when she observed the car crashed with its lights still illuminated, so she called 9-1-1 and went to get her husband nearby in an attempt to help the driver.

Preliminary investigation of the crash indicates that the driver was traveling east on Duncan Road when he attempted to maneuver a left (northbound) turn on to Howell Road. The driver then lost control of the 1990 Toyota Celica that he was driving. It traveled across the roadway, impacted with an embankment on the east side of the roadway, and ultimately came to rest on its passenger side. The driver appeared to be the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He is identified as16-year-old Justin Beazley of Grain Valley, Missouri. It is unknown at this time if he was wearing his seat belt.

There were no signs of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the crash at the scene, although toxicology results must be obtained prior to ruling that out. At this time, speed appears to be the major factor in the crash. An estimated speed is expected to come within the next few days. STATISTIC: According to statistics released by MoDOT's Highway Safety Division, drivers ranging from 16-20 years old accounted for the most crashes in the State of Missouri - over 14% of all licensed drivers involved in a crash. Unfortunately, those drivers accounted for the most fatality crashes as well.

A Study Found That Drivers Wearing Seat Belts Have 5 Times The Risk Of Dying, If Rear Passenger Is Not
A study conducted at the University of Tokyo found that drivers who are buckled up have 5 times the risk of dying in a collision if their rear seat passengers are not buckled up. The injuries to the driver and front seat passenger are caused when the people in the back who are not buckled up catapult to the front.
